The Reggio Approach was developed in the 70s in the North Italian city Reggio Emilia. The concept was founded by the parents of the community and later the teacher Loris Malaguzzi came to the city and co-established its pedagogical foundations.
The pedagogical approach is considered the responsibility of the whole city, which means that other organisations and the parents also play their parts. The principle concept of the Reggio Approach is that early years educators work with the children's strengths rather than remedy their weaknesses. The children should develop individually and realise their full potential. In project work, for example, they learn to foster their own way of expressing themselves. The educators value what the children create, and continuously document the pedagogical work and the children's development.
